GEORGE M. GUTIÉRREZ was a distinguished visual storyteller whose career spanned the heights of American photojournalism and contemporary art. As a longtime photographer, editor, and art director for The Riverdale Press and photographer for The New York Times, he was part of the team that received a Pulitzer Prize for the coverage of the September 11 attacks. His photography has been published in Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, and the International Herald Tribune.
His fine art practice, primarily based in his YoHo Artist Studio in Yonkers, NY, merged his journalistic eye with mixed-media painting. George's work was displayed in several galleries in Manhattan and Westchester, and he curated shows at Purchase College’s PC4 Gallery and Philipse Manor Hall in Yonkers and Gallery18 in Riverdale.
George was born and raised in Manhattan and attended Cardinal Hayes High School and Lehman College. He passed away in March 2024 and is survived by his wife, Dr. Romina Carrillo Gutiérrez.
